How it works
Five steps from signing up to your first conversation
WorldlyChat is a free app for meeting people in other countries. There are no lessons, no matching algorithm to game and no premium wall — you make a profile, find someone interesting, and start talking.
Step 01 · Profile
Create your profile
Pick a username, add a few photos and say where you are from and which languages you speak. Your profile is what people see before they write to you, so a sentence about what you are curious about does more work than a long biography.
Step 02 · Globe
Put your journeys on the globe
Add the places you have been and the places you are going to. They appear on an interactive globe on your profile, which turns a list of countries into something people actually want to ask you about.
Step 03 · Discover
Find people worth talking to
The feed shows posts from people around the world, and the explore view lets you look for people by country and language. It is closer to wandering through a hostel common room than to swiping.
Step 04 · Chat
Start a conversation
Send a message request. If the other person accepts, the chat opens: real-time messages, read receipts, edits, deletes and voice messages when typing in a second language gets tiring. Nobody can flood your inbox before you agree to talk.
Step 05 · Keep in touch
Stay in touch after the trip
Add people as friends, follow their posts and keep the conversation going once the trip or the exchange semester is over. That is usually the part that decides whether a meeting becomes a friendship.
What you get, in plain terms
Real-time chat
Messages arrive instantly, with read receipts, editing, deleting and unread badges so you know where a conversation stands.
Voice messages
Speak instead of typing. Useful when you are practising pronunciation or when writing in a new language is slow.
Message requests
Strangers land in a request list, not in your inbox. You decide who gets to start a conversation with you.
Interactive globe
Your travel history and future plans on a globe you can spin — the fastest way to find something in common with someone.
Feed and explore
Post photos and short updates, see what people in other countries are posting, and find profiles by country and language.
Free and GDPR-friendly
No subscription. You can export nothing you did not share, and delete your account and its data whenever you want.
Who ends up using it
Three groups keep showing up, and they overlap more than you would expect: people who travel and want to know someone before they land, Erasmus and study abroad students arriving in a city where they know nobody, and people learning a language who want real conversations instead of exercises. If you are travelling soon, the travel chat guide is the place to start.
Common questions
Is WorldlyChat free?
Yes. Creating an account, chatting, posting and using the globe are all free. There is no premium tier and no paywall on messaging.
Do I need to download an app?
No. WorldlyChat runs in the browser on phone and desktop. You can add it to your home screen and it will behave like an app.
Can anyone message me?
No. People who are not your friends have to send a message request first, and you choose whether to accept it.
What languages does it work in?
The interface is in English, but people use it in every language they speak. Many members use it specifically to practise a language they are learning.
Can I delete my account and my data?
Yes. Account deletion is built into the settings and removes your profile, posts and messages.
Ready to meet someone in another country?
Creating an account takes about a minute and costs nothing.
